Knee pain treatment in Chigwell: Knee Pain with a Flare-up of Joint Stiffness
A stiff painful knee can make you feel that using the joint will wear it out further. At Chigwell, we assess the presentation and help plan suitable movement and strengthening. If osteoarthritis is contributing, the aim is better function and symptom management; osteopathic care does not reverse joint changes.
Understanding knee pain
Knee pain can arise from the joint, kneecap region, tendons or an injury to other structures. Pain with stairs or squats does not establish a single diagnosis. A locked knee or a hot swollen joint needs a different pathway from gradual discomfort that appears when exercise volume increases.
How we assess knee pain at our Chigwell clinic
We ask about injury, swelling, locking and the exact activities that hurt. Examination may assess movement, strength and task tolerance, with relevant ligament or joint tests. We consider whether imaging or referral would change the plan rather than arranging a scan for every painful knee.
A practical plan for this problem
Tell us how long morning stiffness lasts, whether the knee swells and which everyday activities are limited. We discuss a manageable starting exercise dose and gradual activity progression. Hands-on treatment may be used where suitable, alongside active care. A sudden hot swollen knee or marked deterioration needs medical assessment rather than being assumed to be a usual arthritis flare.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
Suitable care may combine osteopathic treatment with exercises to improve thigh and hip strength, confidence and activity tolerance. The plan depends on the diagnosis: osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain and a tendon problem cannot simply share the same exercise prescription.
Does shockwave have a role?
Shockwave is not a general treatment for all knee pain and does not repair arthritis or a torn meniscus. If assessment identifies a persistent patellar tendon problem, we can discuss whether a tendon-specific pathway is appropriate. Evidence and alternatives must be considered for that diagnosis.
You can start with an osteopathy assessment at Chigwell. If an additional tendon treatment is indicated, we can discuss radial shockwave at Loughton or focused shockwave and diagnostic ultrasound at Epping.
When to seek medical help
Contact NHS 111 for a very painful knee, inability to move it or bear weight, major swelling or a change in shape. A knee that locks or gives way needs prompt advice. Heat or redness with fever can indicate infection and requires urgent medical assessment.
Questions patients often ask
Is exercise appropriate for a knee with osteoarthritis?
It is an important part of management, with the type and dose tailored to your ability. A clinician can help you start at a suitable level and adjust the plan if symptoms are difficult to manage.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
