Achilles tendinopathy treatment in Loughton: Achilles Pain with Calf Raises and Daily Walking
When calf raises or a short walk are uncomfortable, the starting point for Achilles rehabilitation needs to match your current capacity. At Loughton, we can assess the location and behaviour of the pain, then help choose a loading plan you can repeat. Radial shockwave is available for selected persistent presentations, but it does not replace a suitable exercise progression.
Understanding Achilles tendon pain
Achilles tendinopathy can involve the middle of the tendon or its attachment to the heel. Pain or stiffness may interfere with walking, running and calf raises. An insertional problem may need different exercise choices from mid-portion pain; a programme found online is not automatically right for both.
How we assess Achilles tendon pain at our Loughton clinic
We assess the symptom location, recent loading changes, calf function and whether the history raises concern about a rupture. We also ask about previous treatment and relevant medical factors. Imaging is reserved for a question it can usefully answer, such as suspected tearing or diagnostic uncertainty.
A practical plan for this problem
Describe whether symptoms are at the heel attachment or higher in the tendon. We may review a supported or two-leg starting exercise before progressing resistance or single-leg work where appropriate. Improvement can be tracked through walking and calf function, not just how the tendon feels immediately after treatment. A sudden injury or loss of push-off needs urgent medical review.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
Rehabilitation generally centres on progressively rebuilding calf and tendon capacity. Your starting exercise range, resistance and recovery time are selected according to the presentation. Osteopathic care may address associated movement restrictions, but massage alone does not build the tendon capacity needed for a return to demanding activity.
Does shockwave have a role?
Radial or focused shockwave may be discussed for selected persistent Achilles tendinopathy alongside a rehabilitation plan. NICE notes limited and inconsistent evidence and requires special arrangements for governance, consent and audit or research. We explain uncertainty and monitor progress rather than promising that a fixed number of sessions will resolve it.
Radial shockwave can be incorporated into an appropriate osteopathy treatment plan at Loughton. If focused shockwave or diagnostic ultrasound is indicated, we can discuss the Epping service with you.
When to seek medical help
A sudden snap or pop with loss of push-off strength can indicate a rupture. Seek urgent medical assessment rather than booking shockwave. A swollen painful calf, particularly with redness or warmth, also needs urgent advice; breathlessness or chest pain requires emergency help.
Questions patients often ask
Should all Achilles exercises use heel drops off a step?
No. The exercise range must suit the presentation, particularly when pain is at the insertion. Assessment helps select the starting exercise instead of copying a single routine for every Achilles problem.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
