Back pain treatment in Chigwell: Back Pain After Lifting: An Assessment-led Plan

A painful back after lifting can be alarming, especially if it makes ordinary household tasks difficult. At Chigwell, we assess the onset, associated symptoms and current movement before choosing treatment. We do not assume that a painful lift means your spine is out of place or that one technique will permanently correct it.

Understanding back pain

Lower back pain does not always have one identifiable damaged structure. Muscle sensitivity, joint irritation and changes in how much activity you can tolerate may all contribute. Pain severity alone cannot establish a diagnosis, and a scan is not routinely needed for an uncomplicated episode.

How we assess back pain at our Chigwell clinic

We discuss the onset, previous episodes, leg symptoms and the activities you want to regain. Examination may include spinal and hip movement, relevant strength tests and a neurological screen if symptoms suggest nerve involvement. The purpose is to decide whether osteopathic care is suitable and what needs medical investigation.

A practical plan for this problem

Describe the load, whether symptoms were immediate and whether pain travels into a leg. If routine care is suitable, the plan can work from tolerable daily movement towards a gradual return to lifting. We may change the task, range or weight while building confidence and capacity. A substantial injury or neurological change requires the appropriate medical assessment instead.

Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve

Where appropriate, osteopathy can include soft-tissue treatment and joint mobilisation to help you move more comfortably. We combine this with an individual exercise plan and advice about activity. NICE recommends that manual therapy for lower back pain forms part of a package including exercise; repeated hands-on treatment alone is not the whole plan.

Does shockwave have a role?

Shockwave is not a routine treatment for non-specific lower back pain or a substitute for assessment of spinal symptoms. If examination identifies a separate persistent tendon problem, its suitability can be considered on its own merits.

When to seek medical help

Call 999 or attend A&E for new bladder or bowel changes, loss of sensation around the genitals or anus, or severe or worsening symptoms in both legs. Seek urgent medical advice for fever with back pain or rapidly worsening severe pain. Unexplained weight loss or persistent night pain needs medical review.

Questions patients often ask

Should I stay in bed until the back pain settles?

Prolonged bed rest is generally unhelpful for an uncomplicated episode. Suitable movement is usually encouraged, but serious injury or warning symptoms require medical advice before routine self-management.

How will we know whether the plan is helping?

We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
