Frozen shoulder treatment in Epping: Frozen Shoulder or Tendon Pain: Why the Difference Matters
Shoulder stiffness and pain can lead to several labels, but the management depends on the pattern. At Epping, we assess whether the findings fit frozen shoulder, a tendon problem or another cause. Ultrasound can answer some soft-tissue questions, while a frozen-shoulder assessment also relies on the history and movement restriction.
Understanding frozen shoulder
Frozen shoulder involves pain and a substantial loss of shoulder movement. Reaching overhead or behind your back may become difficult, and sleep can be disrupted. Recovery can be lengthy. Other shoulder conditions can look similar, so a label should follow assessment rather than a description of stiffness alone.
How we assess frozen shoulder at our Epping clinic
We examine how much movement is available both actively and with assistance, and discuss pain sensitivity and daily limitations. The pattern may support a frozen-shoulder diagnosis, but alternative causes and a need for GP review remain part of the assessment.
A practical plan for this problem
Tell us whether the shoulder has gradually stiffened and which directions are limited. We compare active and assisted movement and discuss the amount of pain during ordinary tasks. The next step may be gentle rehabilitation and GP input for pain management rather than a scan or shockwave. If a separate question would change the pathway, the appropriate investigation can be considered.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
Care focuses on tolerable movement, suitable exercise and support with daily tasks. Gentle osteopathic techniques may be used where appropriate; forceful stretching is not an automatic answer to a highly irritable shoulder. A GP or specialist can advise about pain relief, injections or other options when symptoms are difficult to manage.
Does shockwave have a role?
We do not present shockwave as a routine cure for frozen shoulder. A separate tendon diagnosis would need its own assessment, and access to shockwave or ultrasound does not mean either is necessary for shoulder stiffness.
When to seek medical help
Seek urgent advice after a shoulder injury if you cannot move the arm or the joint changes shape. Fever with a hot swollen joint requires urgent review. Persistent pain and major stiffness warrant GP assessment, particularly when sleep or daily activities are badly affected.
Questions patients often ask
Should I book ultrasound first because the shoulder is stiff?
Not automatically. An assessment can help determine whether imaging would be useful. The available service should follow the clinical question rather than determine the diagnosis.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
