Knee pain treatment in Epping: Tendon Pain or Joint Pain: Choosing the Right Pathway
Access to advanced treatment is most useful when the diagnosis is clear. At Epping, we assess knee symptoms before deciding whether rehabilitation, medical review or an additional tendon service is appropriate. Pain near the kneecap can come from more than one structure, and a tendon treatment should not be presented as a solution to every painful knee.
Understanding knee pain
Knee pain can arise from the joint, kneecap region, tendons or an injury to other structures. Pain with stairs or squats does not establish a single diagnosis. A locked knee or a hot swollen joint needs a different pathway from gradual discomfort that appears when exercise volume increases.
How we assess knee pain at our Epping clinic
We ask about injury, swelling, locking and the exact activities that hurt. Examination may assess movement, strength and task tolerance, with relevant ligament or joint tests. We consider whether imaging or referral would change the plan rather than arranging a scan for every painful knee.
A practical plan for this problem
Describe the exact location, swelling and the movements that reproduce symptoms. We can assess appropriate tasks and decide whether a specific ultrasound question would change management. If the findings fit a persistent patellar tendon problem, a tendon-focused plan may be discussed. Locking, major instability or a hot swollen knee needs the correct medical pathway instead.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
Suitable care may combine osteopathic treatment with exercises to improve thigh and hip strength, confidence and activity tolerance. The plan depends on the diagnosis: osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain and a tendon problem cannot simply share the same exercise prescription.
Does shockwave have a role?
Shockwave is not a general treatment for all knee pain and does not repair arthritis or a torn meniscus. If assessment identifies a persistent patellar tendon problem, we can discuss whether a tendon-specific pathway is appropriate. Evidence and alternatives must be considered for that diagnosis.
Our Epping clinic provides access to focused shockwave and musculoskeletal ultrasound. These are separate clinical options, selected after assessment rather than automatically added to every appointment.
When to seek medical help
Contact NHS 111 for a very painful knee, inability to move it or bear weight, major swelling or a change in shape. A knee that locks or gives way needs prompt advice. Heat or redness with fever can indicate infection and requires urgent medical assessment.
Questions patients often ask
Can focused shockwave repair a meniscus tear?
We do not make that claim. Shockwave suitability relates to selected diagnoses, and a suspected meniscal problem requires assessment of symptoms, function and the need for further investigation.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
