Sciatica treatment in Epping: Persistent Sciatica and When to Reassess
When leg pain keeps interrupting your day despite treatment, the next step should be a review of the findings and progress. At Epping, we assess whether continuing the current plan is sensible or whether medical or specialist input is needed. Advanced tendon services do not replace the right pathway for a spinal nerve problem.
Understanding sciatica
Sciatica describes symptoms associated with irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve. Pain may travel from the buttock into one leg, sometimes with tingling, numbness or weakness. Back pain alone does not establish sciatica, and pain travelling into the thigh can also come from other structures.
How we assess sciatica at our Epping clinic
Your osteopath asks about the route of the symptoms and checks relevant movement, strength, sensation and reflexes where indicated. We consider whether symptoms fit nerve-root involvement, referred pain or another problem. New or progressive weakness changes the urgency of the pathway.
A practical plan for this problem
Bring a record of symptom changes, previous advice and any scan reports you already have. We look at function as well as pain, particularly strength, walking and altered sensation. A suitable care plan can be modified if activities are still poorly tolerated, but repeated treatment without meaningful progress should prompt reconsideration. Your GP may need to review symptom control or investigation.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
For a suitable presentation, care may combine gentle manual treatment, exercise and changes to aggravating activities. The aim is to help you regain function while monitoring nerve symptoms. Your GP may need to review pain relief or arrange further investigation if symptoms are severe, worsening or persist despite appropriate care.
Does shockwave have a role?
We do not present shockwave as a treatment that releases a trapped sciatic nerve or repairs a spinal disc. Access to advanced tendon treatments within our clinic network does not replace a neurological assessment or a spinal referral when needed.
When to seek medical help
Go to A&E or call 999 for sciatica on both sides, severe or worsening weakness or numbness in both legs, numbness around the genitals or anus, or new difficulty starting or controlling urination or bowel movements. Do not wait for an osteopathy appointment.
Questions patients often ask
Can the Epping ultrasound scan diagnose a spinal disc problem?
MSK ultrasound is not the routine investigation for lumbar discs or nerve-root compression. If spinal imaging is indicated, the correct investigation is chosen through the appropriate medical pathway.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
