Sports injury treatment in Chigwell: A Muscle Strain and a Gradual Return to Sport
A muscle strain can settle enough for daily life before it tolerates sprinting or heavier training. At Chigwell, we assess the injury and help plan the steps between ordinary movement and sport. The return should account for strength and task demands, not simply the number of days since the injury.
Understanding sports injuries
A sports injury assessment starts with what happened, what hurts and which demands you are trying to return to. A sudden muscle strain differs from gradual tendon pain or a suspected stress injury. The right first step is a diagnosis-led plan, not automatically choosing massage or a machine treatment.
How we assess sports injuries at our Chigwell clinic
We consider recent training changes, the mechanism of injury and your current movement, strength and task tolerance. Relevant screening helps identify when a medical assessment or imaging is more appropriate. We also discuss the practical limits imposed by work, training and recovery time.
A practical plan for this problem
Describe the injury mechanism, bruising and any sudden weakness. Once routine rehabilitation is appropriate, the programme can work through manageable movement, strengthening and later sport-specific tasks. The type and severity of the injury affect that progression. We do not routinely add shockwave to a fresh strain or use a comfortable treatment session as proof that a high-speed activity is safe.
Osteopathy and rehabilitation: what treatment may involve
Where suitable, care can combine osteopathic treatment, rehabilitation and a staged return to activity. We aim to rebuild the capacity needed for your sport rather than use temporary pain relief as the only marker of recovery. New or unexplained symptoms prompt reassessment.
Does shockwave have a role?
For some persistent tendon injuries, radial or focused shockwave may be an additional option after assessment. It is not automatically indicated for an acute muscle strain, suspected fracture or every running injury. We explain the evidence for the particular diagnosis and retain rehabilitation within the plan.
You can start with an osteopathy assessment at Chigwell. If an additional tendon treatment is indicated, we can discuss radial shockwave at Loughton or focused shockwave and diagnostic ultrasound at Epping.
When to seek medical help
Seek urgent assessment for severe injury pain, inability to bear weight, substantial swelling or a suspected tendon rupture. A deformity, numbness or cold limb needs emergency review. Do not train through unexplained focal bone pain or worsening symptoms while waiting for a routine appointment.
Questions patients often ask
Can massage alone get me ready for sport?
It may help comfort in a suitable phase, but readiness also depends on strength and tolerance for the demands of the sport. Rehabilitation and assessment of progress remain important.
How will we know whether the plan is helping?
We agree a useful functional goal and review changes in symptoms and activity. The number of appointments depends on the findings and response. If progress is poor, the plan should be reassessed and another opinion or investigation considered where appropriate.
